Chapter Nineteen

Broadway Fanatic’s Broadway Blog

* * *

Looking for a good Broadway love story? (Aren’t we all?) There are a lot of shows to see and cast recordings to listen to that will send your heart aflutter. Lately, I can’t get enough of the sweet, understated love story at the heart of Broken Chords. (I can’t wait to see that one on Broadway.) Of course, you have to love Niamh’s love story too. Two stubborn wizards fall for each other? What more could you want?

Every time Jake attempted to open his eyes, sleep pulled him back under its spell.

His bed felt lumpy this morning. Or was he just exhausted?

Jake tossed and turned a few more times before deciding he needed to fix this. He wouldn't rest if he didn't.

He pried his eyes open and startled at the icy blue ones that stared back. “What the f—”

Scott glowered down at him. “Fancy seeing you here, Jake.” How long had Scott been staring at him?

“Well, yeah. How did you get in…” Heart pulsing in his throat, Jake took in his surroundings. This was not his apartment. His bed had not turned lumpy overnight. He lay sprawled out on the couch in Scott’s apartment. “What am I doing here?”

“I thought I’d ask you that same question.” Scott’s voice was level and emotionless. “I got home from Kyle’s this morning, and here you are.”

He had come over last night to avoid his mom. He must have fallen asleep…

“I talked to Cady,” he said, his throat dry. She’d disappeared pretty fast, though.

Scott crossed his arms. “What are your intentions with my sister?”

Jake couldn’t tell if he was still tired, or if Scott’s words just made no sense. “What?”

“What. Are. Your. Intentions. With. Cady?”

Blinking, Jake tried to wrap his fuzzy brain around Scott’s question. “You make it sound like we’re dating.”

“Are you?”

“No!”

“You’re here all the time,” Scott pointed out.

“To see you.”

“I wasn’t here last night.”

Jake ran a hand through his hair. “No, but my mom is in town, and Cady was here. So we talked.”

“I thought you weren’t interested. You ran out on her on your date.”

This again? Jake huffed. “Because I didn’t know she's your little sister.”

“I told you, I don’t care. I'm the one who set you two up.”

“It’s weird.” Jake shook his head.

“As weird as you staying over all night to talk to her?”

“We didn’t talk that long.”

Scott pursed his lips. Jake was pretty sure he’d seen Cady make that same expression. He sat up, unable to lie still anymore. “You’re being weird.”

“From my perspective, the two of you are getting very close.” Scott took off his glasses and cleaned them with the hem of his shirt. His movements were so methodical they became a little threatening. “I’m looking at a play that this company wants me to direct next season. The two main characters are just like this. They go from arguing to hanging out all the time to making passionate love.”

Jake’s face scalded. “Are you going to direct a porno?”

“Focus.” Scott snapped his fingers.
